The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has announced an exciting new program: EWG Verified: For Your Health. This program is intended to help consumers identify safe products when they are shopping.
Based on the EWG "Skin Deep" database that rates cosmetics on a scale of 1-10 based on their ingredients and manufacturing process, products that gain the EWG VERIFIED seal will have a Skin Deep rating of 1-2, and meet other criteria.
"When you’re walking around Target, or Whole Foods or Walmart, looking for safe, chemical-free products that have been checked for transparency, hazardous ingredients and for GMPs [Good Manufacturing Practices], look for the EWG VERIFIED mark,” Jocelyn Lyle, the EWG’s vice president of development, told EcoWatch.
Upland Road is proud to carry two excellent lines of lotions, soaps and facial moisturizers that are all natural: Just Peachy Organics and DuMonde Skincare. Though these companies are too small to be rated (yet) by EWG, their products would rate 1-2 on the EWG scale 1-10, where 1 is the safest and 10 is the most toxic.
Eventually, EWG plans to develop a similar system for other unregulated products, including food and household cleaners.
